Passage: Proverbs 1:1-7
Message: How Then Shall We Live
Series: Bible Discovery [22

Life is often reduced to proverbial statements or slogans. Advertising these days always has one line that tries to capture the heart of what the product is all about. Think of a few.

1. Share something you know or remember from the Book of Proverbs.

2. The Book of Proverbs is not a collection of hard and fast promises but an observation of the way life is, in general, with God. Discuss in the light of Proverbs 22:6

3. Wisdom is spelled DISCIPLINE – Read v2-3, 7 Paul talks about training for the race
1 Corinthians 9:25-27 and he urges Timothy to ‘train yourself to be godly’ 1 Timothy 4:7-8 How does discipline and training help us to be more wise and godly?

4. Wisdom is spelled INSIGHT – Read v2 We need not only to know what God says but when and how to apply it. “We need wisdom to apply wisdom’. Discuss in the light of Job’s friends. (Was their problem what they said, or was it the wrong time and place?)

5. Wisdom is spelled SHREWD – Read v3 How does God’s wisdom conflict with the wisdom of this age? How do we need to be shrewd in living with this conflict?

6. Wisdom is spelled DISCERNING – Read v4-5 “Discernment means taking the time to examine life, to put it under the microscope…..to critique our societies philosophies and values and goal…. to scrutinise what we are hearing…” How well are we doing that? What part does the Bible play in all this? How can we ‘test’ whether something is right or wrong, helpful or unhelpful?

7. Wisdom is spelled KNOWLEDGE – Read v7 There are two types of knowledge. That which we have been taught and that which we have experienced. Share some knowledge of God that you have learned by experience.
