Jesus

Jesus

Jesus is our example, inspiration, power.

Jesus, the deliberate discipler - Mark 10:35 - 45 - Barry Lines

JESUS, THE DELIBERATE DISCIPLER

Marie was doing some family research on the web this week pursuing details of Stella George (who was awarded an MBE as it turns out). The 'Stella' at the top of the page, was a life coach from Calgary. For those of us over fifty a life coach is a very old bus. Those of a younger generation will know, as the Google item went on to show, a life coach is someone who can help you to fulfill your potential and achieve your goals in life.

Jesus, the miracle worker - Mark 4: 35-41; 6:45-52 - Barry Lines

JESUS, THE MIRACLE WORKER

It is a miracle that we are here today. No, not because it is a long weekend and we are in church! 26,400 web pages refer to the 'miracle of birth' and that is an experience we all have shared. Not a few in this congregation have recently worked this miracle!

I am amazed at the number of times, in our secular society the word 'miracle' is used.

Jesus, the compassionate healer - Mark 1: 29 - 45 - Barry Lines

JESUS & THE COMPASSIONATE HEALER
Mark 1: 29 - 45

We are a healed and healing community.
Our celebration of Communion is a remembrance of our healing.
Jesus came to bring in a new creation in which sin, sickness and death would be no more.
Our awareness of who we are 'in Christ' informs us of our healing ministry.
The involvement of the disciples, before and after Pentecost; the continuing work of the apostles; the role of Elders in the early church; the historic record down through the centuries, all declare that the Church (big C) has a healing ministry.

Jesus, the authoritative teacher - Mark 1: 14 - 22 - Barry Lines

JESUS, THE AUTHORITATIVE TEACHER
MARK 1: 14 & 22

On the eve of his ordination to the Christian Ministry, back in the late sixties, a friend and colleague of mine went out and bought himself a clerical collar. He was concerned that, in his late twenties, with such youth and inexperience, he would not display the authority that was appropriate to a 'man of the cloth'.

He no longer wears it, nor has he for a long, long time.

One can imagine Jesus asking John the Baptist who was his ecclesiastical outfitter and going to look for a special robe and ornate staff. I think not!

Jesus, the obedient Son. Mark 1: 1 - 13 Barry Lines

JESUS & THE OBEDIENT SON
Mark 1: 1- 13

In the two Sundays that I have been here, as interim associate pastor, Neil has encouraged us to 'fan the flame' of our faith and giftedness; Jason has called us to prayer; Don inspired us to aspire to a more simple life; Phil challenged us to acknowledge and serve the God who is the revealer of mysteries.
