Learning to See The Father

How often do we stop long enough to see the Father’s love?

Many of us know the value of reflection. We pause to think about our day, our choices, our struggles and our growth. Reflection is a vital part of growth and Christian discipleship. But reflection can easily become self-focused. We measure our progress. We replay our failures. We compare ourselves with others. All too often, our attention stays fixed on us.

John points us in a different direction. In 1 John 3:1 he begins with a simple invitation:

“See.” Not see yourself. Not see your progress. Not even see that you are a child of God. First, see the Father’s love.

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” (1 John 3:1 NIV)

This is where Christian reflection begins. Each day, take a moment to turn your attention towards our Heavenly Father. Recall His faithfulness. Consider His generosity. Remember that His love is given, not earned. Let His love shape how you see yourself and the day ahead. During the day, notice when you start comparing yourself or questioning your worth. When that happens, pause and return your attention to the Father. Ask, “What does the Father’s love say is true right now?”

The goal is not less reflection. It is better reflection. Reflection that starts with the Father rather than the self. When today could you stop and simply see the love of the Father?

In Him,

Jason
