Start with Mercy

When a choice feels urgent, we often rush towards a solution. We weigh the options, imagine the outcomes and ask, “What should I do?” Romans 12 invites us to begin somewhere else: “In view of God’s mercy.”

First, remember God’s mercy towards you. You are loved by God, not because you have always chosen well, but because he is gracious. This makes us humble about our judgement and grateful our failures do not have the final word.

Then remember God’s mercy towards the people involved. They are not obstacles, problems or opponents. They are people whom God meets with grace, patience and hope. Remembering this changes the way we listen, speak and respond.

Finally, ask how your choice can carry mercy. A merciful decision is not always an easy decision. It may require a firm boundary, a robust conversation or a clear “no”. Mercy does not avoid truth, but it does seek to express truth in a way that leaves room for dignity, grace and hope.

So, when the next difficult choice arrives, pause. Remember the mercy you have received. Remember God’s mercy for the other person. Then ask: How can this decision show mercy?

We will not always choose perfectly. But when we start with mercy, we start from the right place.

In Him,
