How to not waste your time

Is it possible your efforts could be a waste of time? This seems to be the concern of Psalm 127. “Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labour in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain.” In short, if God is not in it, then efforts are useless. It is not that the builders lack the skill or the guard’s attentiveness. The Psalmist recognises what is critical for success and prosperity is the hand of God.

When it comes to church life, we look to God to build and watch over his people. We see this expressed through our humility, our prayerful expectation, our obedience to God’s word, our courageous actions. While we may labour and stand, we know God alone is able to transform hearts and minds. It is imperative for the church to seriously seek God to serve him faithfully and fruitfully.

The Psalmist encourages us to hold the same practice for our daily life. He goes on to write “In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat— for while they sleep, he (God) provides for those he loves.” In the building of the house, the guarding of the city and in the details of attending to life – God is what brings security, success, and prosperity. Can you live out the same conviction as this Psalm? Are you absolutely convinced without God; your efforts are in vain? Will you seriously seek God in all you do?

Enjoy,
Jason
