A WONDER-PACKED VERSE TO LEARN

Alice YoungFrontPage, News, Pastor

The Son is the radiance of Gods glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. Hebrews 1:3 (NIV)

This month’s passage for us to memorise is only one verse long but the mindboggling truths it contains make it one well worth holding on to. It begins with a statement of who Jesus really is, assuring us of this – to know exactly what God the Father is like, all we need to do is look at Jesus.

It continues by declaring Jesus to be the Sustainer of all things by his powerful word. Contrary to popular belief, we do not live each day by our own will or effort. Our every breath, every heartbeat, together with every other single facet of creation, is continually held together by God’s own word, through Jesus. St John of the Cross puts it this way – Were God to turn away for an instant, we would cease to be.

Finally, this verse tells us that Jesus’ work for us, his death and resurrection which provides forgiveness, is final, done and dusted. The idea of sitting down conveys completeness and authority.

So, let’s fix our eyes on this image – Jesus, the radiance of God’s glory and in fact, his exact likeness, seated in heaven, sustaining and upholding the universe from galaxies down to the last blade of grass, and down to you and me, having conclusively provided the way for us to know and love him forever.

Does it get any better than this?!

Those who want to challenge themselves can expand the passage to include verses one to four, but I reckon it’s within everyone’s grasp to be able to memorise this one wonderful verse. Rewards available. Let me know how you go.

With Love, Miranda.
