What are the big decisions we make in our lives? At the end of high school, I thought studying engineering was a big decision. It was, but not because I would work an engineering job. In a way I studied the ‘wrong’ degree. Yet, reflecting on the cascade of opportunities that followed, it is no exaggeration to say I would not be married to my wife, have our children, be a Baptist Pastor, or serve at Unley Park today, if not for that choice. A lifetime of unexpected outcomes from a ‘wrong’ choice.
This is why it is challenging to know what makes a decision, ‘big’. Your decision to take an early train, might mean you meet your future husband. Your wrong turn right instead of left, could mean you avoid a terrible accident. Some people call this serendipity. Whatever we call it, the realisation we don’t know how life will turn out, ought lead to humility. The wisdom in Proverbs is,
“In their hearts people plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps”
Proverbs 16:9
In life, in church, we are constantly making choices. Sometimes we believe we are making ‘big’ decisions. Then we put extra effort into strengthening the choice. This is sensible, good and responsible. Wisdom also tells us to make our choices humbly. Our only true security as we make our plans, is knowing God is at work.
In Him,
Jason
