Pray like elijah

Are your prayers powerful and effective? The Author of James writes:

James 5:16-17 “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. Elijah was a human being, even as we are. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years.”

In the book of 1 Kings we see Elijah as a dynamic prophet and powerful miracle worker. He lived in the northern kingdom of Israel until around 850BC under the reign of the wicked King Ahab. He is famous for holding rain back and calling fire down from the heavens. We read Elijah’s story and wonder at God’s power and presence evident in his ministry. We conclude, this was an extraordinary man living in extraordinary times.

Not so writes James. Elijah was a human being, even as we are. His righteous relationship with God was the foundation for the power of his prayer. The implication James has for his readers is through Jesus, our relationship with God gives power to our prayers. God hears your prayers when you are in trouble, when people are sick, when people are in sin, when elders pray for the sick. (James 5:13-16)

Elijah was a human being, even as we are. We can pray like Elijah, because we know the God Elijah knew. Who needs your powerful and effective prayer today? Go on, pray like Elijah!

In Him,
