Why spiritual companions?

Alice YoungFrontPage, News, Pastor

I spoke recently about the idea of finding a spiritual companion – if you’re curious but unsure, here’s a bit more to think about…

To become more like Jesus, we need to take up practices which give our relationship with him a chance to grow. It is possible to do this alone, but it is more effective, more impactful and just easier and more enjoyable to do it together with someone else. Church life gives a chance to share in community but we also need a space to share more intimately and confidentially with a person that we trust, to help both persons to grow in their relationship to God as well as each other.

Spiritual companions are not mentors or coaches or counsellors or any other kind of expert. They are simply friends who commit to explicitly and regularly share their spiritual journey with each other. The picture is of walking alongside each other.

We suggest that your time together be intentionally shaped by Bible reading, prayer and listening discernment. These are practices that we are all capable of, but that we can also all grow in. Any believer can be a spiritual companion but if you don’t feel you have the skills, we will help you. There will be a workshop on June 8th 12:00-2:00pm which will give you a running start. But the best learning is to give it a try.

The easiest way to find a SC is to ask someone who is already a friend. However, we can help bring companions together if this is needed. It could be someone a similar age and stage to you but it could also be someone quite different to you.

What do I need to do next?

Ask someone to be your companion, or let Miranda know that you would like to find one. Come along to the first workshop. Please RSVP so we can cater for lunch.

I am hoping this will be a nudge for many of you towards a deeper experience of growing together in your relationship with God.

With love, Miranda
