John 15:5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

My summary we are growing in our church mission verse, John 15:5, becoming core. John 15:5 reminds us that fruitfulness flows from remaining in Jesus. Over the past year, this truth has shaped our church’s journey. For instance, through the Practicing the Way series by John Mark Comer, we’ve been challenged to pursue intentional discipleship and deepen our life in Christ.
There are many signs of encouragement. Our 202 4 Discernment sermon series led to meaningful shifts in worship, Church Council practices, planning, and pastoral care—marked by greater prayer, spiritual depth, and discernment. The Alpha Course in Term 2 was a highlight, with many praying, inviting friends, and witnessing God at work as people came to faith and grew in discipleship.
The fruit of remaining in Jesus is visible in our community—in acts of care, prayer, service, and leadership. A standout moment was the youth and young adults-led evening service, which inspired many. At the same time, we’ve faced challenges. We grieve the loss of beloved members—Bruce Battersby, Scott Lindqvist, Anne Graves, and Bevan Lawry. Our ministries to children, youth, and young adults have faced difficulties, prompting ongoing review. The presence of seekers and new believers has revealed the need for stronger discipleship pathways. Financial giving remains tight, yet God continues to provide.
We’re grateful for our dedicated staff team, including new members Ashleigh Pirie and Emily Hoet, and for Chris Bowman during his parental leave. Our Church Council continues to grow in wisdom and leadership—an essential foundation for our future.
Beyond UPBC, I’ve been privileged to serve through Baptist Mission Australia, BCSA&NT, the Aboriginal Berean Church, Big Week Out, Baptist Care, and schools. I’m deeply thankful for our congregation’s weekly expressions of love, prayer, and encouragement.
As we shape our “Life in Jesus” 2030 plan, our focus remains clear: to love Jesus deeply, disciple well, and empower people for leadership and mission. Only by remaining in Jesus, will we bear much fruit.
In Him,
Jason
