What does God want in a church?

Micah 6:8 “The Lord has shown you what is good. He has told you what he requires of you. You must act with justice. You must love to show mercy. And you must be humble as you live in the sight of your God.”

It’s easy to measure a Church by what it provides. Good teaching. Welcoming community. Vibrant programs. None of those are bad things. But Micah asks a sharper question.

When God speaks through Micah, he is not impressed by religious activity or generous sacrifice on its own. He points instead to his greater good of justice, mercy, and humility. Not because God dislikes worship, but because he cares about what our worship produces. For God, faith that never cares for our neighbour has missed the point.

Justice, mercy, and humility are relational measures. They ask how power is used, who is noticed, and whether we trust God enough to put others first. They reveal whether faith has been siloed as religious activity or allowed to shape everyday life.

Don’t you think that reframes what makes a great church? Our faith is not only what happens on a Sunday, but how we walk through the week. It is not what we receive from God, but how we treat people made in God’s image.

This is where I am deeply encouraged by our church. Your generosity, kindness, and openness, as a church, toward the Iranian church, local families and schools, people new to us, embracing different cultures and partner churches speak of our humility and hope in God. Please be encouraged. Keep walking humbly with God. Keep loving others generously and justly. God tells us this is the kind of church he wants.

In Him,

Jason
