Luke 24:13-35

After the crucifixion of Jesus, two followers left Jerusalem confused, discouraged and disillusioned. In Jesus they had seen remarkable things, yet they could not make sense of his violent death. Walking together did not give them the answers. They needed Jesus to open their eyes.

As they walked, Jesus joined them on the road. He helped them understand the Scriptures and see God’s purposes more clearly. Later they reflected,

They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” (Luke 24:32, NIV)

This account shows us something important about following Jesus. We need one another, but friendship alone is not enough. Growth happens when Jesus is in the midst. We learn, side by side, listening to Jesus and learning from him together.

That can happen in a mentoring relationship, in a Growth Group. It can happen over coffee with a friend. As we open God’s Word together and encourage one another, Jesus shapes our understanding and strengthens our faith.

Who are you walking with? And how are you helping each other listen to Jesus? When we walk together and learn from him, our hearts will certainly burn with renewed faith, hope and purpose.
