Time to join a growth group

Alice YoungFrontPage, News, Pastor

For Sunday Church, when will we meet again at our building? While there is indication some social restrictions are easing, I suspect it is unlikely we will all meet before September, possibly longer. Who knows!? It is more likely smaller groups than our whole congregation will be able to meet. This places a priority on our Growth groups – these are groups that have the purpose of connecting Christians to helps them grow together in following Jesus.  … Read More

The blessing of greater love

Alice YoungFrontPage, News, Pastor

On Saturday we commemorate and pay our respects to the brave men and women of Australia and of New Zealand who died or suffered in the tragedy of war. In particular we remember the landing at Gallipoli on the morning of April 25th, 1915. This year we might have a sober sense of connection as we remember how wars also had massive impact globally and nationally.  It is at our Anzac services we are reminded of the sacrificial spirit … Read More

The shift in worship services

Alice YoungFrontPage, News, Pastor

What a dramatic shift we have all taken over the past weeks. In terms of our church life, has there been a time when a congregation was unable to gather at our church? The shift to online services has been demanding and I thank our team who have contributed over the past few weeks. They have been outstanding. I must mention especially Tim Badger and Glenn Dixon. They have served us through their … Read More

What does Easter mean for our time?

Alice YoungEvents, FrontPage, Pastor, Uncategorised

1 Cor 15:58 “Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.”  Our conversations have been filled the world’s tragedy and our personal anxiety. We drive down empty roads and pass empty shops. In a way we have not experienced in our lifetime, our whole world is aware of its mortality and fragility. What might Easter … Read More

Disappointed with God

Alice YoungFrontPage, News, Pastor

Lent Passage: Matt 21:1-11  That first ‘Palm Sunday’ when Jesus entered Jerusalem was heavy with expectation. Jesus rode in on a colt and with a donkey, completing the prophecy ‘your king comes to you”. With the throwing down of their cloaks and palm branches, the crowd anticipated Jesus as this prophesied king. The whole city was stirred. People told one another “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.” Jesus was to … Read More

When God does not act

Lent Reading:  John 11:1-45  In John 11 Lazurus, a good friend of Jesus was dying and his sisters Mary and Martha sent word for Jesus to come. When Jesus heard Lazarus was sick, the scripture says “he stayed where he was two more days.” With such critical news Jesus made no plans to leave, he did not even tell his disciples, he stayed where he was. Within this time, Lazurus died. This might be our experience of God. We ask, pray, plead and there is silence. Because we … Read More

How is God at work in these times?

Alice YoungFrontPage, News, Pastor

Lent: John 9:1-41 This week’s reading for Lent comes from John 9, when Jesus heals a man born blind. Jesus is asked by his disciples, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”. The disciples hold a karma-like belief that sin’s judgement works out as the curses and challenges of life, even to the progeny. … Read More

Are you thirsty?

Alice YoungFrontPage, News, Pastor

Lent Reading: John 4:5-42 “Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” When was the last time you were really thirsty? Although we live on a dry … Read More

When faith is confusing

Alice YoungFrontPage, News, Pastor, Uncategorised

John 3:3 “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.” By the first response the conversation between Nicodemus and Jesus is a lesson in conflicted confusion. For all his learning the Jewish teacher cannot comprehend what Jesus might mean by “born again”. He fails to connect what Jesus says, to … Read More

Defeating Temptation

Alice YoungFrontPage, News, Pastor, Uncategorised

Jesus was tempted in every way, just as we are. 1 John 2:16 has the trifecta for temptations which come our way –“ the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life”. Throughout his wilderness testing the devil tempted Jesus in these 3 areas: the flesh hungered for stones to become bread, the eyes were shown the splendour of kingdoms, pride was aroused by the questioning the Son of God’s privilege.  The power of temptation is in not being satisfied with … Read More
